Lady Allum Resthome and Retirement Village Wins the Kalandra Community Connections Award

Dr Christine Clark was delighted to present Lady Allum Business and Care Manager Jodi Lake with a  gift voucher for $1,000 in recognition of  Lady Allum's exceptional effort in catering for residents’ needs and preferences by creating an environment that promotes inclusion and choice for older New Zealanders.

Jodi explains the project and how it came into being, saying “We noted that particularly in these modern time, photographs and older memorabilia were becoming scarcer and when family members were compiling a eulogy or a memory board, it was proving difficult. Many memories and certificates etc had been discarded with moving, downsizing or coming into care. Also, we recognised that family are often scattered around the globe, so we began compiling memories on a USB stick.

This could be shared with family regardless of where they lived, and they could add recent events to these individualised USB’s as they wished. This legacy will enable following generations to have a glimpse of these past lives lived by their grandparents.

It quickly became apparent that recording the actual resident’s voice when possible, was essential. We have a lady who passed and now her husband is with us – when he gets sad, we play the stick and he continues to get comfort from “her presence.” The staff also benefitted as they got to know more about the resident as a total person and the fascinating lives and experiences they had chosen to tell us about.”

Kalandra is honoured to acknowledge the innovative and life-capturing work done by the thoughtful and kind team at Lady Allum as they strive to help their residents, their families and their staff.
